The Power of the Comment

We all read blogs. Some more than others.Sometimes we make a point of checking certain ones every night, some maybe only once a week. If there is a comment we may take the time to see what someone had to say about the post and maybe even comment ourselves. I know I like to see comments on my posts. That lets me know for sure that someone is reading. But first you have to write something that stimulates the mind of the reader.I don't think I do that too often. Writing is my son's forte, I just kind of "wing it"! ( I would like to change that a little as time goes on though ) I do leave a comment or two here and there. A couple weeks ago I left one here : First Day Issue. I saw the title and author on Night Owl's blog list, and it was not familiar, so I clicked on it. First Day Issue was a newer blog started by a Seattle Mariners fan on the west coast. I welcomed him to the blogosphere and made a casual remark about trading Indian cards for Mariners. After a couple emails back and forth I received this in the mail :

Over 300 Tribe cards !!!
I didn't know what to think when I opened the box.
I shuffled through the stack and just became more and more overwhelmed at what I was finding.Obviously I can't show every card ,well I guess I could, but I may lose a lot of readers before I got through. I just pulled out some of the highlights to share with those who are interested.

The blaster box is merely a prop to show the size of the stack.

Another break down of the same stack.

There were 3 non-baseball cards.
1991-92 Skybox Terrell Brandon of the Cavs
2008 Topps Mayo Cut Plug Shaun Rogers of the Browns
( I think my youngest son is interested in that set; yeah it's yours if you're reading ! )
2000 Donruss Classics Braylon Edwards of the Browns

This pair of Bowman prospects are my first Matt LaPorta cards.
He has been showing some promise as of late.

Here we have a 2001 Pacific Private Stock Kenny Lofton game-used jersey card surrounded by 2007 Topps JhonnyPeralta black and blue refractors.

The following shows some examples of the rest of cards that Bud sent.

There is really a great mixture of players, years and brands.

The moral of the story is:

Don't be afraid to speak up. Someone may not like what you have to say, but what do they know ?!

Thank you very much Bud, for this terrific box. Hopefully you will like the priority mail box that is headed in your direction just as much as I enjoyed this.

More belated trades - David,Capt.C. and First Day Issue

After cleaning piles of cards off the top of my desk I finally found the cards I received from David from his 2009 A&G box break.
These Tribers were a good start to my Indian set this year. I have found a couple others since...

....however, I'm not collecting this set and these are available for trade if anyone is interested.
The Swiss flag is actually from 2007 . I would like to trade it for a U.S.A. flag.

Thanks again David for the the box break and the great cards !

After a casual comment to Bud at First Day Issue, to welcome him to the blogosphere, I mentioned that I would be interested in trading Indian cards for Mariners. Well, after a couple emails I received this box in the mail !!

Over 300 Tribe cards !!!

After a quick glance through the box there are many I know I need.I will have a separate post on this later. Also have a package from the Great White North.I'll showcase Capt. Canuck's goodies later also. He seems to be tied up with football right now. Or at least the cheerleaders!

Post OPC break post, Mail day

This is the first of my belated trade posts. This one came from from Lonestar.

Ok, the first one's a Yankee. But there's an awesome Tribe patch commemorating the '54 All-Star game in Cleveland. Then a very shiny Hafner Man of the Year.
Then an older player on a new card and a newer player on an old card.Of course, Farrell isn't playing anymore, but neither is Feller, but Feller played before Farrell .... now I'm getting confused! Next !

X marks the spot for Sizemore. He's been heating up here as of late.

Some more young and old. We got Bert towards the end of his career but he still posted an 11-2 record with 2.89 era in 1981. I wonder if they wooden spikes when he was born in Holland ?

Next we have a mini-Topps Joe Carter and another old vs. new comparison of 1st basemen.

Ah yes, the good old days ! C.C. in a Tribe uniform.

And then, a collage of other great cards !

Add Image

Group breaks are fun. Yeah, but if you are the breaker, maybe you shouldn't do 3 - 36 pack boxes at the same time! Thanks again to everyone who participated and I hope you all enjoy the cards I sent. They were all shipped out this week.

It was fun, but I got way behind on posting trades and other meaningful "stuff". I will try to catch up and hope I don't forget anyone. If I do, I'm very sorry, I really appreciate everything everyone has sent to me and it was all GREAT !!

Random Act package from Tribe Cards

A lot of bloggers out there already know about David from Tribe Cards. He has to be the most generous and giving collector of all. I'm a little late in posting this but I have thanked him earlier.
When he says random he means random. There was a little of everything in this package. I can't begin to show it all, but here are some of the highlights.

Here we have an Edison Volquez #'d jersey card.

Then a Randy Johnson #'d jersey card.

And an "item personally worn" by Jason Miller card.
We may not want to know what the item was .

The "Rip Master " auto. Very neat item.

Round Pepsi cards and E.T.

3-D World's Series trivia and even a postage stamp !

I'm not sure which is more scary.

These are all a little outside of my box.

Football ,I understand.
I like Ray Stevens.
But how did they get a picture of my car ?

Now these I really like and understand !!

I have quite a few of these.

But not these three particular ones.

Why the close-up of an 1988 Topps card?

Because it's actually a 9 1/2 x 12 " folder ! Topps made these for a couple years.
There was much more including some nice Tribe items.
Thank you again ,David . Very much !!

Old School OPC break news

Ok, the packages are all sorted,a few extras added to each one and should start going to the post office tomorrow on my lunch hour. The lines are long so I will probably make two mailings with the ones farthest away going out first. Hey, Capt.Canuck, to save postage I'm putting yours in a bottle and tossing it into the lake so watch the shore line !!!

Team breakdown is as follows:

Blue Jays 80 cards
Braves 47
Yankees 41
Mets 41
Phillies 40
Red Sox 40
Dodgers 39
A's 38
Reds 38
Tribe 35
Giants 34
Twins 34
Mariners 31
Cubs 30
Pirates 29
Padres 26
Tigers 24
Marlins 23

There were 8 cards with multiple teams represented.According to the rules, this is how they were divided.

Card # 58 Yankees-Mariners-Brewers (team not chosen) -Orioles (team not chosen) Card goes to Mariners (fewest total cards)

Card #179 (2) White Sox(team not chosen)-Yankees-Pirates-Yankees. Both cards go to NY_hitman (he picked Pirates and Yankees)

Card #551 Orioles-Cubs(team not chosen)-Expos(team not chosen)-Braves.Card goes to Cubs(fewest toal cards)

Card # 591(2) Royals(team not chosen)-Mets-Mets-Indians. 1 card to Mets and 1 card to Indians

Card # 656 Tigers-Dodgers-Indians-Yankees.Card goes to Tigers(fewest total cards)

Card # 676 Twins-Yankees-Mariners-Cubs. Card goes to Cubs (fewest total cards)

I added some extra cards to each team pack. ( My wife seems to think I have too many cards, I just don't understand !) Everyone will receive approx. 70-80 cards for each team they picked. They will be mostly commons, picked at random from various years, for the same team you picked.
Once again, thanks to everyone who participated and I hope all will be satisfied !

Cardboard Mania is back ! And the OPC winner was.....

...actually, everyone who participated ! Thank you very much !
Capt. Canunk may have had a little insider information (LOL), since these cards were printed in Canada, as his Blue Jays turned up 80 times within the 3 boxes. What I can't figure out is how he knew to take the Braves also. They had the 2nd highest total at 47 cards, yeah Toronto "blue" everyone away. But if you picked the Marlins, Tigers, Padres or Pirates (the four lowest card totals) don't worry, "Be Happy " . I'm digging through my archives and making sure everyone receives about the same number of cards for each team they signed up for.I had a much better turn out than I ever dreamed I would get so it make take a little longer than planned to get all the packages out,but I hope to make it worthwhile.

On to Cardboard Mania. It may a little sporadic at times, as he is pretty busy with other concerns, but he hopes to post on at least a semi-regular basis. Reading this blog is what gave me the incentive to start my own, so if you don't like my work, blame him ! Be easy on him though as he is my son . He has made us very proud with his accomplishments so far and I'm sure he will continue to do so. You can also see his work here : BGSU.

You asked for it - you got it Old School OPC Box Break !

Well, I asked for suggestions and you guys gave 'em to me, so here we go!
I'm new to hosting something like this also, so bear with me. My post last night brought responses from David, Rod (Padres), Jeremy (Mets), Capt.C. (Braves), Fan of Reds (Reds) and Night Owl (Dodgers). David ,you were the first to comment so I'm offering you the Tribe if you want to get in. I already have the entire '92 Indian team set and several from 1993. Everyone, please reaffirm your choice on this post.

I'm going to combine all 3 boxes into one big break. 972 cards with 28 teams comes to almost 35 cards per team on average.Obviously that will vary. The 1992 set follows the '92 Topps set pretty close except for cards 386-407 which were all-star cards in Topps. In OPC those numbers are cards of players who were not in the 1992 Topps set. There are also 5 Gary Carter tribute cards in OPC. There may be some prospect cards with multiple players from different teams. Those will go to the team, represented on the card, that has the smallest number of cards at the end of the break.

I believe the 1993 OPC and Premier sets should be all single player cards. They do not follow the 1993 Topps set and are all new designs and photos.
Following in the wise footsteps of David, any traded player cards will go to the team as pictured on the card.

I'm asking only $4.00 per team,$7.00 for two teams. Only $2.00 for Diamondbacks or Rockies !! ( I may take them myself ) Actually ,if there ARE any Diamondbacks or Rockies, I AM keeping them !

You can pay with paypal @ randj531@yahoo.com , send a check, M.O. or hidden cash AT YOUR OWN RISK . Any checks will be dropped from 3 feet onto our hardwood floor. If it rebounds to my hand, don't hold your breath 'till you receive your cards!

There are 108 packs, so this will take some time,I never took typing in school.I am getting pretty good at hunt - and - peck though.I hope to start about 1PM EST on Sunday , 08/16/09.

Let the Game Begin !!

NOTICE: I wasn't going to mention this, it was going to be a surprise. You will probably find more than just OPC in your package, not earth shattering, but some nice surprises !

NEW NOTICE !!!!! I just discovered a slight error. There may be Colorado Rockies cards in the 1993 boxes. I had Marlins listed but not Rockies. If anyone wants the Rockies at any time ,they can have them for $3.00. Sorry for any inconvenience.

An OPC Dilemma and More wrappers from Covered in Wrappers

Once again Marie, over at A Cardboard Problem , sent a few wrappers over my way.

The 2009 Icons I have but I did need the 1998 Topps Hobby version wrapper.

She's 3 for 4 today! I had a 6 card and an 8 card A&G wrapper but not the 12 card shiny vinyl one.
I haven't seen the 2009 "X" cards in this area yet.

She sent a couple cards also. Tribe cards are always good.
I've got some A&G cards coming from David's box break, but Jhonny P. isn't one of them.
Victor is my first Upper Deck X for this year also.
Thank you very much, this is all greatly appreciated !

And now for the O-Pee-Chee problem.
No, this is not about the new OPC but these.....

Last Friday, right after I got my paycheck, (the timing couldn't have been better,or worse, depending on how you look at it!) I saw a yard sale sign that said "Sportscards". That's kind of like hearing the Pied Piper of Hamelin and I'm one of the children. There wasn't a whole lot that was of interest to me, but I did buy these three boxes at very reasonable price.

1992,1993 and 1993 Premier

Now, I'm just not sure what to do with them.

All three boxes were sealed. Is there anyone building sets of these? I'm only interested in the Tribe cards. I'm open for opinions, ideas and/or trades.

Adam Has Arrived ! & Cards From the Nationals

Thanks to the wonderful girls over at Dinged Corners this Adam Miller has a new happy home !
Thank you very much for this trade !
And now, some the treasures that came came home with me from the Nationals in Cleveland.

A lot of those who attend a show of that magnitude are searching for the latest boxes of new products, scarce auto or memorabilia cards, older cards to complete sets or a chance to get live autographs. Well, that all sounds good to me, but being on a limited budget my boys and I were in search of the bargain boxes. Toward the end of the day we found 3-4 tables of 5-cent boxes ! Most of these cards came from there and other ten-cent boxes.

I bought some of these cards for my sample collection and others with some of you readers in mind !

This is long, so bear with me !!

Sometimes I just get into too much of a hurry ! Being a Tribe fan, I grabbed up this card, judging from the bottom lines and not looking at the picture. When I got home and read the back of the card, it was the first INDIA Indians to sign. Hey ! The rest of you guys and gals are going to get old too !!

Football ? Jim was obviously not you're ordinary run-of-the-mill player. As a kid I watched him make some runs through tackles that were unbelievable.I actually picked up two of these cards, one for each son.

These are very neat 1997 SPx. It's hard to tell from the images, but there are 4 different variations here. At 5-$1, these were one of my more expensive purchases !

"The name of this blog is 'All Tribe Baseball' and this guy claims to have a fairly large Indian collection. He goes to one of the biggest card shows in the country and this is what he comes back with ? ! " Not to worry ! The Tribe cards I found will be another post. I also got some interesting older packs.
